I've noticed that the costs for holidaying in the Maldives now are becoming quite alarming, considering there are numerous other destinations that offer comparable experiences. Has anyone experienced a similar rise in standards? I would imagine it would be quite difficult for some of the resort staff to assimilate how much we all have to save to visit the Maldives. I'm visiting over the Easter period (but not Komandoo this time), and even though it's a holiday period, it's costing an arm and a leg (my choice I know).

I would be really disappointed if I had to give up visiting because of cost; and trying out larger islands does not seem to fit the bill any more Rolling Eyes

Alfie.

We agree, we have been going to the islands for the past several years, and each year the prices are going up and up. We have been told that this will continue as it is due to the fact that the islands are disappearing with the likes of global warming etc. Apparently they islands will be halfed in the next ten years!

Better get booking soon eh!

Hi this an interesting topic and I agree that the prices are getting ridiculous and all the new islands that are being opened seem to be 5 star also the islands that are being renovated seem to be movinf upmarket as well.I have noticed that Reethi beach an Island we have visited is being closed for 2 months or so from June onwards for a revamp and I bet the priceswill go through the roof there as they did at Veligandu and Lily beach when they reopened after there revamps.Bob.

Prices on the up. Yes most certainly. But surely this is down to supply and demand, along with a slight misunderstanding from the resorts of exactly what we want.

Lilly Beach was a lovely Island for parents with children, we visited twice without kids! But why have they gone up market?

Komandoo, I think is still about right if you arrange direct and get a deal.

But lets face it, they will keep take the price up until people stop going. Then the price will swing back to us slightly.

Global warming and the fact they might not be there in 10 years is as spurious argument.

Just my thoughts. If we pay, they will take the cash Rolling Eyes It's a business after all not a service.

To add to that. We transfered a few years ago from Kuramathi to a very small (but vey basic) Island called Feusdu. It was wonderful, about 45 rooms. It closed down for refurb, once it re-opened we enquired on a price. It was more per night than we paid for a fortnight!

But it was all 'Silver Service' in your own private villa. A BUTLER FOR YOUR USE ONLY?

I, for a fact, find some of the level of 'pampering' over the top. Christ I can stir my own coffee!

Just want a small Island, where all guests mix. I do find a divide between the divers and us mere sun worshipers. Not sure why but think it's just the divers mix on the boat and that sets the tone for their grouping.

Small Island, good mixing, stir my own coffee, what more could I ask for? Oh yes slightly lower price Very Happy

I also wonder what to do with a butler, there is supposed to be one at my next Island but what the hell is he going to do? I might add that that was not the reason for booking either!

When I have to pay a large and possibly inflated price for a holiday then my expectations are raised accordingly. Reading other forums, it appears that the new Govt were trying to promote/establish more affordable 3* island resorts to try to counter the run to establish 5* plus resorts that seems to be the route most hotel/resort owners are following.

There does come a point though at which I throw in the towel and look to other destinations for value/comfort and white sandy beaches. After this holiday, I will be seriously looking at comparing other parts of the world for comparable value. Sad really, but greed can be a terrible thing No

Alfie it is a fact that during recessions the really wealthy people are not affected and they continue to spend heavily which imo is why more and more 5 star resorts are being built out there but they are driving away a lot of repeat customers by doing this and as any businessman will tell you repeaters are essential.BOB.G

Have we all not made a stick to beat ourselves with? Yes I want 5 star (or perhaps just 3 star) just want a small Island, no kids, great staff, great views, great beach. Oh yes Komandoo comes to mind! But happy to do basic things for myself! Good luck with keeping your butler out of your hair!

Could I ask which Island you have picked for your visit?

I agree with you. But must say I think Komandoo are aware of repeaters. It's a nice touch when you arrive and your villa has your own name plate!

Demand is just out stripping supply, so prices are up.

I'm going to Huvafen Fushi for that 'special' landmark birthday. Yes, you've guessed it......21 again! It's somewhere that I've hankered after for a while and decided to take the plunge, after all, there's a limit to how many times you can turn 21 Embarassed

I don't believe I will be disappointed; I want to think it's a lot to do with the company, the event, and hopefully the service too. After Komandoo I realised that there were too many advantages to a small, intimate island and some personal service. Maybe the butler can air my smelly trainers after working out at the gym Laughing

As always, the majority of reviews on Tripadvisor are good with the odd one or two disappointments, so overall I have a good feeling, but..........

Seriously though, I will report back to all who are interested.

The Maldives is a beautiful place but is not alone. I will move on if the price continues and just maybe visit every few years or not.

I agree, the wife and I like good service but I don’t want to be suffocated.
